First it was Harry and Meghan, now the Beckhams have fallen for the charms of a battery-converted Jaguar, after David and Victoria gifted an electric XK140 to son Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz, to mark their marriage.
The prototype electric E-type Zero used by the royals in 2018 not only inspired David Beckham when choosing his son’s wedding wheels – a 1954 XK140 open two seater (OTS) converted by Silverstone-based specialists, Lunaz Design – but also prompted Justin Lunny to start Everrati, a company that recently found fame for electrifying a Porsche 911 (964).
Connections go deeper than that, however; the former England football captain has been a Lunaz investor since 2021, and the firm, based near the home of the British Grand Prix, Silverstone, in Northamptonshire, continues to offer battery-converted Bentley Flying Spurs and Range Rovers, alongside Rolls-Royce Phantoms and Silver Clouds. It also converts dustbin lorries to battery power.
Lunaz began by fully restoring the car concerned, commissioned by Beckham. Similarly converted cars, which cover the full XK sports car range (120, 140 and 150) start at £350,000, with build slot waiting lists currently stretch into next year.
Beckham presented Brooklyn and Nicola with the car, complete with plaque, whose colour was named and chosen confidentially, at Palm Beach in Florida, USA, where their wedding took place over the weekend.
Billed has having similar performance to that of an original 1954 XK140 OTS, it is said to feature an uprated chassis, complete with appropriately modified brakes, suspension and steering, to help the XK140 go and stop in a manner that befits its conversion. Some subtle changes to the dashboard, instruments, switchgear and controls are required to allow for the conversion to battery power.
Founder and CEO of Lunaz, David Lorenz, said: “In creating this beautiful, electrified Jaguar XK140, we are honoured to bridge the gap between David Beckham’s professional life, where he is an investor in Lunaz and his family life. This remarkable car is the perfect gift to his son Brooklyn and daughter-in-law, Nicola on their wedding day. In every respect, this extraordinary electric classic car by Lunaz symbolises a bright, positive future.”
